Six strategic objectives driving coordinated action to advance solutions to marine litter and plastic pollution in Africa.
The Africa Marine Litter and Plastic Pollution Conference (AMLPPC01) is anchored in six interconnected objectives that collectively establish a Cameroon-led operational model — providing a scalable blueprint for the 22 member states of the Abidjan Convention, directly aligning national action with the global targets of the UN Decade of Ocean Science (2021–2030).

Coordinate African Action
Coordinate African action on marine debris and plastic pollution, with a focus on Cameroon
Drive unified, continent-wide efforts to tackle marine litter and plastic pollution, using Cameroon as a strategic focal point and model for replication across the 22 member states of the Abidjan Convention.

Convene Multi-Stakeholder Dialogue
Convene governments, industry, academia, civil society, and other stakeholders to discuss the latest science, strengthen collaboration, share best practices, and co-develop practical solutions
Create a structured platform where diverse actors — from national ministers and university researchers to fishing communities and youth advocates — can sit as equals, co-producing evidence-based, culturally grounded, and technically viable solutions for sustainable environmental action.

Institutionalize Beach Cleanup Day
Institutionalize Cameroon Beach Cleanup Day as a national annual event and parallelly enhance data collection and public awareness for global monitoring efforts
Transform community-led cleanup initiatives into a nationally recognized and government-supported event. This institutionalization creates a standardized, repeatable baseline for measuring pollution levels, feeding directly into international monitoring frameworks under the UN Ocean Decade.

Mobilize Resources
Mobilize technical and financial resources for regional interventions
Activate investment pipelines for large-scale maritime interventions across the Gulf of Guinea region. This includes facilitating partnerships between international donors, national governments, the private sector, and NGOs to unlock the technical expertise and funding necessary to implement scalable, evidence-based solutions.

Advance the Abidjan Convention
Advance the implementation of the Abidjan Convention for coastal protection
Use the conference as an operational mechanism to strengthen national compliance with the Abidjan Convention’s protocols, particularly the LBSA Protocol (Land-Based Sources and Activities). By fostering South-South knowledge sharing and regional peer accountability, this objective bridges the gap between policy commitments and tangible ground-level enforcement.

Empower Youth, Women & Communities
Empower youth, women, and communities as solution leaders
Ensure that those most affected by coastal pollution — fishing communities, women’s collectives, youth organizations, and indigenous groups — are not simply consultees, but active co-designers and co-implementers of the solutions generated by this conference. This objective directly integrates equity, inclusion, and grassroots leadership into the conference’s core outputs.
